Study shows positive effects for bipolar disorder while on the Ketogenic Diet

The study out of Poland is about how the ketogenic diet can help people with bipolar disorder. Sometimes medications do not work well for people with bi polar disorder, so they need other ways to treat their condition.

The study reports the case of a man who had bipolar disorder and tried a ketogenic diet. He was able to stop taking one of his medications and reduce the dose of another. He also achieved full remission of his disorder.

Bipolar affective disorder is a chronic mental disorder, characterized by mood swings alternating between depression and manic or hypomanic episodes. Unfortunately, in some patients pharmacological treatment is not effective, and a certain group of patients shows treatment resistance. Therefore, other treatment methods are sought after, including a change in diet. The most promising is the ketogenic diet. In the presented case study of a male patient, thanks to the introduction of the ketogenic diet, full remission of the disease was achieved, doses of lamotrigine were reduced and quetiapine was completely discontinued.

The study explains some possible reasons why a ketogenic diet can help people with bipolar disorder. For example, it can affect the chemicals and signals in the brain that control mood, energy and stress. It can also improve the health and function of the brain cells and protect them from damage.

The study suggests that a ketogenic diet may be a useful option for some people with bipolar disorder who do not respond well to medications. The study acknowledges more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety.
